Topic 1:

Spatiotemporal Activity in Nonlocal Media - Bard Ermentrout

Much recent experimental data on the activity of neurons in the cortex indicates that it take the form of complex patterns like waves, spirals, and oscillations.  Large scale models of neural activity can be simplified to systems of nonlocal (that is the interactions between different neurons can extend beyond neighbors) equations.  The goal of this project is to investigate these models numerically and using various types of perturbation analysis.
